I am unfortunately not unionized. Case in point. When I went to Las Vegas I left my mother-in with the keys to my car and the key to the mailbox. I put the rest of my keys away for safe keeping. I put them aside so well (or not so good) that now, after returning from Las Vegas for nearly a week, I still can not find the rest of my keys. I think Darthypie took them and hid them somewhere. At least I hope that's what happened....
When you're on a budget, the first things to go are those "extras," like manicures. But don't despair, we've come up with an effective home manicure that will make you feel as if you've indulged in the salon - and your nails will look amazing to boot.

REMOVE: When removing polish, Michele Pierno, spokesperson for Kiss Products, advises us to "clean nails underneath with polish remover to bring out the white tips. This gives an instant healthy look to natural nails."

SHAPE: "Clip nails with a clipper to get straight, even edges," Pierno says. "Or if nails are short, quickly file to shape. Nails should all be close to the same length, even if they are short."

TREAT: Ellen Sirot, star hand model and creator of Hand Perfection products says, "Before applying polish, make sure your hands and nails are in tip-top shape by giving yourself an at-home hand scrub with 1/8 teaspoon olive oil and 1/8 teaspoon sugar. Blend together and rub gently on the backs of your hands for one minute, then wash off with warm water. To brighten and tone nails, soak them for five minutes in lemon juice and rinse."

CUTICLES: Rather than clip cuticles, which can stimulate growth, push them back and remove excess debris from nails with a product like Lippmann Collection's Cuticle Remover, which is my personal favorite. Deborah Lippmann, celebrity manicurist and the creator of Lippmann Collection, suggests that you "apply my Cuticle Remover anywhere skin touches the nail plate and gently push the skin toward the knuckle with an orangewood stick or Q-tip." Lippmann Collection also has a great home manicure set called Start Me Up ($44 via amazon.com; sold out on http://lippmanncollection.com).

MOISTURIZE: Try Sirot's Hand Perfection Complete Day Cream on the hands and go all around the nail bed with Hand Perfection Nail and Cuticle Treatment, which comes in a handy pen. Both products are unscented and infused with vitamins, omega fatty acids and botanicals. (Order by phone at 888-972-4263.)

PREP: Before applying polish, you'll want to remove any oil or residue from the nail bed. I like the Dazzle Dry Nail Prep ($3 for 1 ounce, $14.75 for 8 ounces; available at www.vbcosmetics.com and salons and spas). Apply a few drops onto a cotton pad and swipe over the nails. Now you can apply your base coat - my favorite is the Dazzle Dry Base Coat ($12.50). It dries very quickly, so you can jump right into polishing!

POLISH: Apply your polish of choice. For nice, even coverage, you'll want to apply two coats - even if it's a one-coat formula.

Here are a few favorite shades:

-NYC Expert Last Nail Polish in Late Night Lilac, a stunning, springy purple ($2.49 each, available at drugstores nationwide).

-Borghese Rapido Fast Dry Nail Lacquer in Maraschino, a hot but surprisingly elegant pink. For the more adventurous, try Marino, a lovely cornflower blue ($8 each, available at Ulta.com and drugstores nationwide).

The formulations of both are fantastic: quick-drying and long-wearing.

FINISH: Complete the look with a chip-resistant topcoat that provides UV protection, like Lippmann Collection's On a Clear Day Top Coat ($18, available at http://lippmanncollection.com). "To keep nail polish from chipping, apply a clear topcoat every day to keep them chip resistant for a longer-lasting manicure," Pierno suggests.

And if you can treat the nails but don't have time to polish just yet, Pierno recommends the Kiss Magic Shine File (available at beautyonlinesupply.com) for glossy, buffed nails. I tested this myself and loved the natural shine it gave my nails.

---

Trae Bodge is a beauty and lifestyle expert who writes for www.Deals.com - your easy-to-remember source for the best online coupons, deals and sales.
