ATMA held training on Vermicompost and Bokashi

Compost heaps are a wonderful way to get rid of vegetable kitchen waste, but what about other food scraps? No doubt, even if you are an eco-activist, you put leftover meat, fish, cheese and bones in your refuse bin.

There is an alternative recycling method which uses all kitchen waste called bokashi, a Japanese word meaning “organic fermented matter”. Developed in the 1980s by Professor Terou Higa, it uses effective microbes to decompose the material.

The fermentation process is a cheap and hygienic means of accelerating composting and improving soils.

Bokashi comprises mainly food-grade wheat bran (or another carrier on which the microbes can feed), salt and molasses. This mixture is inoculated with a very small amount of liquid that contains probiotic cultures. No more Stinky Garbage Reduce Greenhouse Gases.
