Before I begin, I want to emphasize that this diatribe can be applied to any cheap knock-off parts, whether exhaust, coilovers, brakes, etc., but for this example, I will use the wheels.
See the cars in F1, JGTC, FIA GT, WRC, DTM, WTCC, etc. and you'll see the wheels of large manufacturers in the world, like Enkei, BBS, skate and OZ Racing. (There are other companies that produce strictly for racing wheels, but I'm focusing on the most common companies that also have wheels for vehicles from the street.) These companies have invested billions of dollars and an incredible amount of time in the actual research, development, testing, safety, and production of their wheels. The wheels produced by these companies are designed for optimum operation and performance in mind. These manufacturers produce different wheel axles, both wrought and cast iron. However, these wheels are not cheap. People outside professional Motorsports often have difficulty justifying the cost of their daily drivers....
A few years ago, this is how it used to be in Raleigh. Of course, the disadvantage that it was the prelude to a lot of illegal street racing, a place where people jumped meetup and hoods of the cars mentioned, the daughters oogled and was put to the road a large group, make the third roller speed at speeds until the cops showed absurd.
Then came the repression SPR got sick of her, and street racing - bad things - with impromptu performances at night time car unorganized - were basically eradicated. You used to be able to run at a number of different wide open and well lit parking lots off Capital Blvd (US-1) on a Friday or Saturday around 11 and see all kinds of hot rides. Some of them was dumb - I mean, it was when it was acceptable to the door and underglow Lamborghini on a Mitsubishi Diamante. (Just kidding, that was never acceptable.) But there was large-turbo Supra, VR-4, DSM-2 stages, all kinds of hot Honda, you name it. The first place I saw an American-spec Evo? Parking lot of Capital Boulevard late at night.
