NOXON - Twenty students from Heron's Elk Mountain Academy - many of whom come from challenging backgrounds themselves - got a lesson in volunteerism earlier this month.
The Sanders County Ledger reports the young men helped the Community Services Fellowship Food Bank establish a community orchard and garden here.
They shoveled compost, dug holes and planted 40 fruit trees and 40 blueberry bushes.
Then, three of them returned a couple of days later to help unload 2,000 pounds of food from the Montana Food Bank Network.
"We have to remember that our students are still kids and have gone through some rough times," academy director Mike Linderman told Ledger contributor Jay Simons. "By having them participate with community projects such as these, their eyes have been opened to how volunteerism is helping others. And working with people who receive no compensation for the hard work they do just because there are needs in their communities, is something they have come to admire.
